It’s a common refrain you’ll hear from all walks of life - strive to be a lifelong learner. It’s also the kind of phrase you’ll see at a dentist’s office, written below a soaring eagle, proudly hung above the reception desk. Who could argue with lifelong learning? Sure, at 45, someone might feel they’ve soaked it all in, and if they’re successful and everything is going swimmingly, who am I to cast aspersions? And while the notion of lifelong learning is a fine one, it can be darn hard to pull off. Originally from Huntington “West by God,” West Virginia, I later moved to Cincinnati, OH, attended the University of Cincinnati, and have been a proud resident ever since. In my younger years, I was that kid who adults dreaded. I was the kid who always asked, “but why?” If you’re a parent, the dreaded “w” word can drive you completely mad. Who wants to offer justifications for every little thing? Especially if said things are tough to explain. Well, that never deterred me, and I have to say I always respected those adults who took the time to explain the “why.” Once I had amassed enough answers to my questions, I naturally came across some holes in conventional dogma. I’m not claiming some sort of sage-like wisdom here, but when 2 + 2 didn’t always equal 4, I was (and still am) quick to point it out. Fast-forward to the present and I still like to invoke the “w” word where it applies. I received my BA in Business with a double major in Finance and Real Estate in 2011 from the University of Cincinnati (Summa Cum Laude). I asked a TON of questions in college, and ever since starting my own lawn care business at 15 I’ve been fascinated by the complexity of our economies, the multitude of moving parts, and how the inputs (human and physical) move in harmony. In 2013 I struck out and started Sims Investment Management, LLC, a company aimed at helping individuals, families, and small businesses navigate an ever-evolving financial landscape. I relish spending time with my wife, Emily, giving back to the community through Junior Achievement, and being a part of several committees and groups with the University of Cincinnati. A couple of fun facts - I have my pilot’s license and was also a basketball manager for UC’s men’s basketball team. These were two areas where the answers to my “why” questions were either - “because you’ll crash and die,” or, “just do what I say and stop asking why.” But that never deterred me from asking! This podcast/blog/vlog is designed to be an outlet where I can share some of my personal experiences and life lessons, and hopefully inspire others to never stop learning.
